BATTERY TIPS AND TRICKS
- Double check your new battery for correct fit before activation and installation
- There may be more than one “right” battery for your ride – choose based on your specific needs
- Deep discharge or prolonged discharge leads to harmful sulfation and shorter battery life
- A discharged battery freezes, a charged battery does not freeze
- Charging a battery gives off gases (hydrogen and oxygen) that are explosive
- Higher temperatures mean faster discharge
- Temperatures over 130° F kill batteries
- Bulging sides on a battery generally mean it has been frozen and needs to be replaced
- Parasitic draw and short trips cause a battery to drain
- The more electrical accessories you add to a bike the greater the current drain
- Dirt on top of your battery case may cause discharge
- Make sure vent tube is clear of obstructions
- Add water if electrolyte is low
- Do not overtighten leads to terminals or terminal connections
- Trickle chargers are generally used to maintain and charge at about 1 amp
- High rate chargers can cause permanent battery damage – maximum charge rate is 2.5 amps
- Monthly maintenance and testing is beneficial
- Highly recommended to remove battery before seasonal storage
- Keep removed battery fully charged to prevent freezing and sulfation
